In Caenorhabditis elegans, the heterochronic pathway controls the timing of somatic cell development. This may be conserved across species, as several heterochronic genes have counterparts in mammals. The let-7 miRNA and its regulator LIN28 seem to regulate the start of puberty in mice and humans. – available as a preprint on bioRxiv
